Narrative:

On take off when I called for gear up the first officer tried the gear handle and said it was stuck. Before I could say anything he tried it again and pressed the landing gear down lock release. It released the handle and the gear came up normally; no warnings; cautions or status messages. The gear was up and locked by 800 ft AGL. I called maintenance climbing through 18;000. Suggestions: impress on the first officers that you don't hit buttons or throw switches when something happens without the captain's input and QRH guidance.
