Narrative:
While on approach we had a flap fail caution message with flaps failed at eight degrees. I was the pilot not flying so I gave the radios to the first officer while he flew and I ran the QRH. Procedure had us land with flaps 8 and in computing the landing distance; I came up with a landing distance required of about 6;885 ft. Our landing runway was only about 6;600 ft; figuring we were going to need a longer runway we elected to divert. Our landing was uneventful; however; we noticed the aircraft did not take much runway to stop. After taxiing to the gate we realized I had used 'required' runway landing distance from the ACARS landing data and not the 'actual' landing distance. Although diverting was a more conservative action; the runway length we required for the flap failure was only about 4;300 ft and we could've landed safely at our destination.

Title: Following a partial flap failure to extend the flight crew of a CRJ-200 opted to divert to an airport with a longer runway only to discover; after landing; that they had misinterpreted the runway length required and could have landed legally at their original destination.
