Narrative:

The captain was the pilot flying and I was the non flying pilot. We were being vectored for approach at a mountain airport; and cleared to descend to 5;000 ft. I think we were still talking to center and were passing through approximately 5;800 ft. The terrain warning and pull up occurred. The captain took evasive action; climbed a few hundred feet back up. I notified ATC; the warning ceased. We returned to assigned altitude. Have GPWS replaced on the aircraft or have a new site terrain survey done in the area around this mountainous airport. We were in and out of the clouds descending. [There were] many [cloud] layers with numerous holes.
