Narrative:

On second flight of day I questioned the pushback crew if he was using the new phraseology of 'ready to push' with captain's response 'cleared to push; brakes released.' he said 'oh yea there is a card here let me read it.' I briefed him thoroughly on the new 'implied' release of brakes with his ready to push call and we executed the push. Third flight of the day (we are batting 1;000); I asked the push crew if he knew about the new pushback terminology and implied permission to release brakes. He said he did not know anything about it. I said okay let's use the old terminology and procedure. We executed the push without incident. During each push the 'marshalers' executed the new hand and wand signals perfectly and professionally. What is missing in the training is probably the most important; with respect to safety. The crews have not been trained on the 'implied' brake release permission.

Title: A319 Captain laments the new push back phraseology and that ground crews may not understand that announcing 'ready for push back' is a clearance for the Captain to release the brakes and report.
