Narrative:

Pilot flying called for 'gear down flaps 30' while on final. We heard the nose gear come down however; the main gear did not. Shortly thereafter; a red EICAS message appeared; 'gear disagree.' pilot flying called for a go-around and pilot not flying contacted ATC. Pilot not flying completed QRH [for] 'gear disagree.' pilot flying contacted ATC and declared an emergency as a precaution and had rescue equipment standing by. Flight landed safely and continued to the gate without the assistance of rescue vehicles. Passengers deplaned safely as the crew contacted maintenance and dispatch. Gear was selected down however; the main gear did not extend.
