Narrative:

This was my first trip into dsm. I asked for progressive taxi to runway 23. I was instructed taxiway alpha to bravo; hold short at bravo. I repeated the instructions and taxied to bravo. After run up I was cleared for takeoff on 23. I taxied forward to the sign 5-23 turned left and took off. My mistake; I was on taxiway bravo. I [was] mistaken by the sign 5-23 that I was on the runway. The runway was actually on the other side of the sign. Tower caught the error but I was already in the air. He said to continue the climb. I should have studied the airport diagram before taxi. After the fact however; looking at the airport diagram alpha doesn't seem to intersect with bravo.
