Narrative:

Flying in IMC conditions at 5;000 MSL after being redirected to jvl. Plane experienced a large increase in altitude and then a loss of altitude with severe turbulence and loss of directional control. Gyrations included up to 60 degrees of bank. Regained control after exiting the cell and asked for landing at jvl; which chicago center provided. I had been watching the radar display provided on my garmin 496; however; this cell came out of nowhere.

Title: An IFR PA-28 pilot entered an undetected thunderstorm cell and temporarily lost control in turbulence. After exiting the cell he regained control and diverted to his alternate airport.
