Narrative:

Takeoff during typhoon. Severe wind conditions existed during takeoff. ATIS at time of takeoff reported wind at 180/37. We waited in line on taxiway a for almost 1 hour for our turn to take the runway. Flaps were kept up due to heavy typhoon winds directly on the tail. The airport was closed several times due to microburst alerts on the opposite runway 16L at about 3 miles from runway threshold on approach corridor. No microburst alert was ever given at departure end of rwy 16R. While we waited in line; the winds were originally from 150 and as the typhoon direction changed; so did the wind. Just prior to our takeoff roll; we requested runway performance and inserted a wind at 190/36 just to see what would be our maximum crosswind limit; should the wind change more to the south west (current wind was 180/37). The resulting performance message showed that with 190/36 wind; there would be a 31KT hw; 21KT xw. FM takeoff xw limit of 25KTS would not be exceeded. After the performance check; we were issued takeoff clearance. PF determined that we would delay rotation until near vr maximum of 174KTS. V1; vr; V2; rotate; was briefed. At approximately 100 AGL; the aircraft hit a strong wind gust which caused an attitude upset and roll to the left. Instruments were difficult to view due to violent shaking of aircraft. Airspeed increased significantly toward vmo. I called 'attitude' to PF and suggested 'right wing down'. Corrections were immediate to wings level. On climbout; at 4;500 AGL; I called out that wind readout on the pfd showed wind at 200/100! After climbing through 6;000 MSL we encountered a period of only light turbulence. During our wait for takeoff; 2 aircraft took off before us. The first was a B777; the second a B737. Neither aircraft mentioned any severe turbulence; although it was obvious the wind velocity was very high. I contacted the tower and told them about our take-off conditions and climbout conditions. I think I also suggested to stop further takeoffs due to severe turbulence on climbout. During our takeoff and subsequent climbout in severe turbulence; there were no injuries; no flap overspeeds and no vmo overspeeds.

Title: A B747-400 flight crew momentarily lost control of the aircraft when they encountered severe turbulence immediately after takeoff from RJAA during the onset of a Typhoon. They reported that the flight crews of two departures immediately prior to their own failed to report the turbulence. Prior to leaving the Tower frequency the Captain/reporter advised of the turbulence and suggested departures be curtailed.
