Narrative:

I was number one holding short of runway xx. I called in ready for takeoff. The tower assigns me to hold short; and I reply back and was holding short. Then about 20 seconds later; tower tells me to hold short again. So I thought that what I wasn't doing what they were asking me to do; and it registered in my mind that they are asking me to line up and wait. So I lined up and waited. Then tower told me to exit the runway. By assigning me a hold short twice; as a student pilot; it threw me off. I now realized what I did wrong. I learned from what happened; and will make sure it wont occur again.
