Narrative:

We climbed through our assigned altitude by 700 to 800 ft. While in the climb; ATC assigned a clearance that we could not accept (direct to an intersection)--for the second time! While trying to sort out the clearance the flying pilot got distracted and overshot our assigned altitude. ATC's confusion as to what kind of navigational equipment our aircraft was equipped with and the workload in the cockpit aggravated the situation. We corrected the problem as soon ATC pointed it out.
