Narrative:

After engine start we got a call from a flight attendant advising of fumes of hot wire and a report that the aft flight attendant handset was hot. I notified ATC for a gate return. Gate was close by; went directly to gate and deplaned the passengers. The aft handset was deactivated by offline maintenance. We then re-boarded [the passengers] and departed one hour late.I believe there must have been a short in the wiring for the handset. This handset was already put on MEL twice; and replaced once. We should change the MEL procedure to disconnect a handset when it is taken out of service.
