Instructed by operating manager (O/M) to remove flight data recorder (fdr) from aircraft X and install fdr in aircraft Y. Complied with (C/west); removal/reinstallation (right/right) per aircraft maintenance manual (amm) 31-31-01; which makes no reference to [requirements] in procedures manual. [I] called maintenance control center to verify part effectivity. No problem was noted for part swap.

Title: Two line mechanics report about in-service Flight Data Recorders (FDR) being swapped between two MD-88 aircraft to satisfy an FDR MEL deferral. Mechanics were not aware that in-service Flight Data Recorders could not be swapped from aircraft to aircraft per their Maintenance Procedures Manual (MPM).
