Narrative:

Flight to pvd. CAT III operations in affect. When cleared for the ILS CAT 3 runway 5 at pvd an EICAS message appeared autoland 1 not avail. We confirmed our configuration; i.e.; frequency; course; RA; etc. At that point we discontinued the approach and after communicating with dispatch proceeded to our alternate. Maintenance met us and cleared the write-up. At this point in was getting late and I advised dispatch that we would not be able to do the CAT III approach without the tower being open. He made a call and told me that the pvd tower would remain open until 0200 local. We then planed ZZZ as alternate and fuel. Once we were airborne and switched to bos center; we asked them to confirm that indeed the pvd tower was open. Bos center said that it was closed. We let dispatch know and proceeded to our alternate. Upon arrival we did a demo auto land and once again received the same EICAS message. I again wrote up the autoland and advised maintenance.

After maintenance clears the discrepancy and the crew is advised that PVD Tower will stay open past their normal closing; they depart. Upon check in PVD Tower is found to be closed and the crew diverts back to the original departure airport. During a practice CAT III approach the autoland system is found to be still inoperative.
