Narrative:

After takeoff; [there were] acrid electrical fumes in cockpit [that] did not dissipate through 10;000 ft. Verified with flight attendants and fumes [were] reported in mid and rear of aircraft. [We] donned oxygen masks; declared an emergency with ATC; and advised intentions to return to the departure airport. Completed QRH smoke; fire and fumes checklist. Notified dispatch via ACARS and free text of intentions and emergency; squawked 7700. Completed overweight landing checklist [and] before landing checklist. Normal landing at 158;800 pounds. Sink rate at touch down [was] 100-200 FPM. Fire and rescue inspected aircraft on runway and cleared to taxi. Proceeded to gate where maintenance met aircraft. Completed logbook and proceeded to next gate with passengers to depart within the hour to the scheduled destination.
