Narrative:
Enroute to mdw; I thought ATC cleared us direct to awsum on the goshen arrival. Executed clearance in FMC. Several minutes later; ATC queried our cleared to point and corrected our clearance to ashen instead of awsum. The first officer received the initial clearance while I was off frequency. I should have verified the accuracy because direct to awsum seemed unusual.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A pilot selected AWSUM intersection on the anticipated MDW GOSHEN 5 STAR after he was cleared to the ASHEN intersection which is 86 NM closer. Similar sounding intersections caused the confusion.
