Narrative:

Had loop a fire light on climb out through 11;000 ft; followed by a #1 engine fire light. Retarded #1 engine per QRH procedures; light extinguished with in three seconds. Left engine at idle. Followed QRH procedure. Returned to departure airport for landing. Landed overweight at 139;000 pounds; smooth touch down and roll out. Arff met aircraft; checked us out and said no abnormal fire indications. Returned to the gate and deplaned the passengers after talking to maintenance and dispatch.

Title: An MD82 flight crew responded appropriately to fire warning indications from the left engine; shutting it down and returning to their departure airport. An inspection after landing determined there was no evidence of an actual fire.
