Narrative:
Main cockpit door popped open on the top latch during climb. Dealing with the distraction of the door and deciding on action to be taken regarding the door a level off at 5000 was missed until the controller questioned the altitude. A descent to 5000 from 5400 was made immediately. Moments later the lower latch on the door released and the door opened violently at which time an emergency was declared and a landing was made at a nearby airport.
