While climbing out we experienced a reduction of power. [We] made 180 to return and observed puff of smoke. Smelled hot oil and heard a steady mute pounding. Shut off engine and landed on access road to fields. No injury; no damage to anyone or anything.

Title: A C172's number five piston burned through around an outer edge causing a power loss at 1;300 FT after take off. A successful off airport landing was made after the engine was shut down.
