Narrative:

After stating that I had sdl runway 21 in sight; I was cleared by sdl tower for a visual approach. I judged myself to be high in relation to runway 21 on a straight-in approach so I began to descend. The tower controller stated that their terrain/ground proximity alarm was sounding. MSA was 3;100 or 3;500; I don't remember. I responded that I was clear of the terrain. I passed below the tops of two peaks; one off of each wing; then finally got the VASI in sight and could only see red lights . . . At which point I stopped further descent for a few moments.
