Narrative:

Aborted takeoff at 100 KTS as directed by the tower. An MD80 aircraft was cleared for take off on same runway in front of us. As they were passing approximately 5;000 ft down the runway we were cleared for take off behind him. As we made our 80 KTS call out the MD80 crew was heard on the radio to say they had experienced an engine failure. At the same time we also noticed the MD80 at the departure end of the runway and climbing very slowly. Also about that time the tower controller told us to stop our take off. I stopped our aircraft on the runway then taxied clear. I told crew and passengers what happened; why and what we were doing. I then taxied back to a gate to have maintenance inspect our hot brakes and possible tire damage. No damage was noted and we were ready to depart within approximately 20 minutes.our flight attendants indicated they were too emotionally distraught as a result of our aborted takeoff to continue their duty period and requested be removed from that trip. It took an hour to have them replaced. We could have been back out at the runway within 20 minutes after our initial aborted takeoff but instead left an hour later. All of the 105 passengers remained on board and continued to destination with us.
