Narrative:

We were proceeding visually to runway 28 in hdn. The first officer had briefed and was following the VOR DME-B procedure to the hdn airport. As we passed hirtu intersection at 9;300 ft it became increasing clear that we were too high to continue the approach. The first officer called for a go-around and commenced a VFR traffic pattern to the south. I called the CTAF and advised local traffic of our intentions. While on downwind a regional flight waiting to depart advised us the den center was looking for us on 120.47. I contacted den center and advised the controller of our go-around. He stated that we needed to have contacted him in a more timely manner as without our IFR cancellation he could not let another air carrier proceed to hdn. I offered an apology for my omission and we continued our approach to hdn and landed without incident.
