Narrative:

We were given an amended clearance on ACARS. We requested a full route verbal confirmation from clearance delivery. Then at the hold short for runway 23 we were given another amended route with kempr as a fix in the reroute. We wrote the clearance down and spelled the fix as kemar. Both fixes are pronounced the same but have one different letter in them. We read the clearance back to ATC. They did not catch the mistake. Around acy the aircraft turned east. We wondered why we are going east for 50 miles then south. The center controller gave us a 270 to the right then direct to ilm. If there is a similar sounding fix put it on the other side of the country or at least a few hundred miles away.

Title: A B737-700 Flight Crew mistook a clearance via KEMPR intersection as via KEMAR. Clearance Delivery failed to catch the error on the readback and a track deviation; quickly noted by ATC; occurred.
