Narrative:

While in cruise flight the brake ovht temperature warning message came on. I canceled the message and pulled out the emergency checklist; upon completing it sent me to the QRH; where I continued through the rest of the checklist. While I was completing the checklist [captain] was descending and slowing down so that we could lower the gear. After completing the brake overheat reset procedure the message did not go away. At this point [captain] gave the controls over to me so that he could call dispatch [on commercial radio]; it did not work and never was able to [reach] them via commercial radio. He then proceeded to talk to the flight attendants and let them know what was going on and what are plans were. With the warning message never going away we declared an emergency [and] diverted to the closest suitable airport. Upon landing we taxied off of the runway where arff looked over the gear and told us everything looked normal and we were good to continue to the gate.
