Narrative:

The damaged seal was found on walk around. I was told to get the damaged piece trimmed and make a long term deferral item to cover it. We were also working a vibration issue on the aircraft. I made the long term deferral item using company maintenance procedures xx-xx for an item that requires attention; but is otherwise ok for service. It turns out that I should have used the aircraft's configuration deviation list (cdl) chapter-27 aircraft; as the controlling reference.
