Narrative:
While on the arrival; we were instructed by ATC to descend to 8;000 ft. Descending out of 9;800 ft; ATC pointed out GA traffic below. Both the captain and I made comment on how our descent paths were going to cross. As a precaution I quickly queried ATC to confirm our descent clearance; to which they replied; affirmative. We got an RA on the GA traffic 5 seconds later as we were descending through 9;500 ft. The RA command was to climb which we did. As a result we climbed to 10;300 ft. I informed ATC of our deviation; to which they responded with a heading and a further descent to 4;000 ft. ATC also informed us to stop the climb because of the possibility of another RA for GA traffic at 10;500 ft. We expedited our descent to 4;000 ft and after some maneuvering; landed successfully. ATC failed to notice the closing rate of our aircraft and a GA aircraft.
