Narrative:

Flight was a student IFR cross country. I instructed student to make 1 turn in holding and inform the controller of our intentions. Due to misunderstanding, approach was not informed of our holding intentions. Difficulty in hearing student's end of communication and failure to ensure approach understood resulted in holding west/O clearance. Approach noticed our error, but no conflict with other traffic resulted. In the future, I will be sure that I hear approach clear us for the turn in holding.
