Narrative:
Early on the kepec arrival to las; we were cleared direct to hetax at 8;000 ft. ATC asked us to call the field [in sight] for a visual approach to runway 1L. 25 miles from the runway we called field in sight and were cleared for the visual approach. We set 5;100 ft for nodiy and started to descend. Soon after that; we proceeded direct to nodiy. Around the las 195 [radial] 17 [miles out] at 6;600 ft we received a 'terrain; terrain' warning. We pulled up and the warning stopped. ATC called to warn us about the terrain. The only visual display on the nd was green dots.when terrain clearance was assured; we continued the approach using the ILS. It was a very dark night and we could not see the terrain. By proceeding direct to nodiy; we were too close to the ridgeline that was west of the runway 1L extended centerline. We should not have cut the corner without having the terrain in sight; or performing a more thorough terrain analysis.
