Narrative:

When cleared for visual approach to runway 17 at roswell; I requested landing on runway 12. ATC replied; 'runway 12 is closed.' flying closer to the airport; I saw at least 100 airplanes stored on/near runway 12. I had checked local notams and the a/FD for the airport as well as looking over the airport diagram from the aeronav (FAA) online service. The printed charts were looked at again and nowhere did it depict a closed runway 12/30. Normally; a closed runway would be depicted in 'grey' rather than 'black' on the airport diagram chart. However; on short final to runway 17; I saw a faint; faded; yellow 'x' on the end of runway 12. On the airnav.com web site; under runway information; it does show that runway 12/30 is closed indefinitely; however the faa a/FD and IAP charts do not. This could lead to a dangerous situation if a pilot needed to land his airplane into a strong wind at night and chose runway 12/30.
