Narrative:

Upon exiting the runway there was a loud bang at our flight deck door. My first thought was that a sill guard had fallen against the door. At block in; ramp personnel entered the aircraft through the main cabin door and picked up the sill guard that had fallen against the flight deck door. The second officer opened the door and asked if the sill guard had fallen and they said yes and said that it would have been impossible for us to exit through that door.this event suggest a need for better diligence and/or training for ground personnel in securing the sill guards properly.

Title: The flight crew of a DC8 was effectively trapped in the cockpit when; upon landing; an unsecured sill guard outside the cockpit door fell into a position that would not have allowed the cockpit door to be opened from the inside. Ground personnel were able to move the obstruction and release the crew.
