Narrative:

I approached the jxi airport from the southwest at an altitude of 1;500 MSL making regular position reports over the CTAF; checking and listening for other traffic in the area and noting none. Turned approximately a 2 mile final and announced final for runway 36. At about short final; I was startled to see a vintage military aircraft turning on final approximately 600 ft in front of me and from a high right base position. I observed the aircraft grow larger in my field of vision and immediately took evasive action; opening the throttle and breaking high to the left. As I leveled off from my break I observed the other aircraft making a low pass down the runway. No evasive action was noted from the other aircraft and my attempts to contact the pilot over the CTAF where unanswered. It appears that the other pilot did not see me nor was using his radio. The miss distance between the other aircraft and mine is only approximate as visual contact was momentarily lost during evasive maneuvering.
