Narrative:

I am a student pilot. I was in the traffic pattern doing full stop landings with taxi-backs to the active runway. The incident happened on my final and last landing approach. I was advised of traffic to follow on my upwind leg. I did not see the traffic nor did I respond back to ATC about not seeing the traffic; my fault. I was again advised to follow traffic on base leg when I was on down-wind. I responded to the tower on that call and noticed an airplane touching down on the runway. I thought that was my traffic and turned base leg. I evidently cut my traffic off which was also on base leg. He made a pull up and departed to the east asking the tower where I came from.I have learned from my experience and my flight instructor has grounded me until I take at least three hours of remedial instruction from another flight instructor.
