Narrative:
After gear [was] raised; red gear warning light for nose gear remained illuminated. Abnormal checklist [was] carried out. Warning light remained for nose gear. Emergency [was] declared. Burned fuel down to landing weight [then] landed at departure airport. After stopping aircraft; gear pins were installed. Maintenance said that nose strut was completely flat. No visible damage. Taxied to gate; [then] switched aircraft.

Title: An air carrier aircraft declared an emergency; burned down to max landing weight and landed uneventfully following receipt of a nosegear red warning light after gear retraction. Landing gear oleo strut found to be flat upon inspection.
