Narrative:

[I] landed at my destination to pickup passengers. On taxi in I received my out-bound clearance; 'cleared as filed; 2;000 ft; 125.35 departure frequency; squawk XXXX.' set up radios and altitude (2;000 ft) in altitude alerter. Left aircraft to pay landing fees; and wait for passengers. [I] loaded passengers and bags. [We] departed the runway; right turn to 350 degrees. Autopilot on; climbing fast; realized aircraft was not going to level at 2;000 ft; realized altitude select had been moved! It was at 3;800 ft! Pushed nose over hard but we still went through our altitude by 1;200 ft. Either I bumped it or my passenger bumped it on setting into our seats. Not sure how it was moved.
