Narrative:

Departed teb on the RUUDY2 off of runway 24. Leveled off at 2000 feet; crossed ruudy intersection and started a turn early to the brezy intersection. I was the PF and asked the pm to check with ATC to see if they wanted us to fly a specific heading or go direct brezy. While already in the turn to brezy the pm asked ATC and they said that we started the turn 'a little early' but go ahead and fly a 040 degree heading direct brezy on course. The expected procedure after ruudy is to maintain a 280 heading. I made the assumption to turn direct brezy after ruudy due to always getting some kind of vector before ruudy anyway. Brief the departure thoroughly every time; make no assumptions and confirm anything in question with ATC before initiating an action.
