Narrative:

Shortly after gear retraction; a continuous muffled banging was heard from the left engine. I felt a moderate reduction in thrust and we continued to climb on the runway heading. After confirming it was the left engine; the throttle was reduced to idle. We leveled off and declared an emergency with engine failure and intentions to return to the airport. The captain elected to shut down the engine. We transfered control to make the captain pilot flying; advised ATC that we would need some vectoring for time to run some checklists. ATC offered a runway and we agreed. ATC vectored us nicely and kept their communications to a minimum.we briefed the flight attendants for an anticipated normal approach and landing. I reprogrammed the FMS for our return and accomplished the engine failure/inflight shutdown checklist. After landing we cleared the runway and had fire/rescue visually check the left engine. Nothing was noted. We then taxied to the gate.
