Narrative:

Climbing southbound from ord to FL230, we were asked to expedite the climb through 12000'. Reaching 12000', I began to accelerate and continued climbing at 500 F.P.M. At 12500' a tan and white small aircraft (Y), pilot wearing white shirt, shot under the right side of our plane (my seat) heading north. No time for evasive action. Chicago ARTCC did not have contact with that plane. They called back after our report to tell us that chicago approach was working the airplane and he was at 12500'. This was a bad situation. Supplemental information from acn 91694. It happened so fast no evasive action was possible. It was only luck that prevented a midair.
