Narrative:
I was involved in a flight competition and I was the third plane in a heat of three planes. I was following a cessna 152 for runway 29L. I lost sight of the C152 ahead of me just before I was ready to turn base. I saw a C152 over the numbers to the runway so I followed it until I was rolling out on my turn from base to final. The C152 I saw over the runway was the wrong C152 and the wrong runway. ATC advised me of my deviation before I actually got lined up with the runway. I drifted back over runway 29L for a go-around and was back into the correct pattern. No other incidences occurred.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PA28 pilot lost sight of his traffic during turn to base then followed the wrong aircraft to the wrong runway. The Tower identified the deviation and informed the reporter; but not before an NMAC occurs.
