Narrative:

We were departing wsss. The ATIS and our clearance had us departing runway 20C flying the mersing 4B (vmr 4B).upon requesting taxi clearance we were cleared to the holding point for runway 20R. Prior to moving the aircraft; we installed runway 20R in the FMC. The mersing departure that presented itself for that runway was the vmr 1V. I reviewed the SID page and saw that this was correct for the runway that we had been assigned. Having already started the engines and with fuel an issue due to anticipated large weather deviations enroute we wanted to get started towards the runway as soon as possible. On taxi out; we confirmed with each other the departure and saw that it linked up with at least the first 4 fixes of the original departure off of runway 20C. On departure; I announced to the departure controller who we were; that we were flying the vmr 1V departure and climbing to the assigned 3;000 ft. The controller made a comment that that departure was designed to be used when national defense drills were in use and that this particular departure was not even in effect yet. I commented that this was what our commercial aero charts and FMC database had offered us for the departure on runway 20R. After being cleared to a higher level and flying the initial routing which was identical to the vmr 4B; the controller came back; cleared us direct to mersing (vmr) and said that he had checked with clearance delivery and that we had been issue vmr 4B after departure. I commented to the departure controller that that SID was not valid for runway 20R and that we had received the runway change after receiving that clearance and installed the departure that was offered to us by the database for runway 20R. I said that I would research it; notify our company and that ended the discussion. No further comment was made by ATC. My comment is if in fact the vmr 1V was not yet current; why was it in the database at all and depicted on the SID charts?

Title: When WSSS changed their departure runway to one that wasn't applicable to their initially assigned SID the flight crew of an FMS air carrier flight assumed they could merely select a SID with the same name (but different designator) that was applicable to the newly assigned runway. They chose the incorrect one with the predictable confusion resulting after takeoff.
