Narrative:

We were cleared for takeoff on runway 5R. Another aircraft had just landed runway 5L. The aircraft from runway 5L was cleared to leave runway 5L and cross runway 5R. Neither I, nor the first officer, heard this transmission. We heard the tower tell the landing aircraft on runway 5L to 'hold short' of runway 5R, then the clearance was to 'stop.' the aircraft did hold short of our runway (5R). I remember thinking how that fellow might have gotten in trouble had he crossed our runway (5R). Just before handing us over to departure the tower operator asked if we received his transmission to 'cancel our takeoff clearance.' I replied, 'no.' of course if we had, we would still have been on the ground. I don't know what the remedy for that type of situation is, unless it's to teach controllers to listen also. We certainly never acknowledged any clearance cancellation if it was given. Too many controllers have one-way communications--a microphone--the speaker--may just as well be nonexistent.

Title: MLG TOOK OFF AFTER TWR SAID IT WAS TOLD TO CANCEL TKOF CLRNC.

Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 5R. ANOTHER ACFT HAD JUST LANDED RWY 5L. THE ACFT FROM RWY 5L WAS CLRED TO LEAVE RWY 5L AND CROSS RWY 5R. NEITHER I, NOR THE F/O, HEARD THIS XMISSION. WE HEARD THE TWR TELL THE LNDG ACFT ON RWY 5L TO 'HOLD SHORT' OF RWY 5R, THEN THE CLRNC WAS TO 'STOP.' THE ACFT DID HOLD SHORT OF OUR RWY (5R). I REMEMBER THINKING HOW THAT FELLOW MIGHT HAVE GOTTEN IN TROUBLE HAD HE CROSSED OUR RWY (5R). JUST BEFORE HANDING US OVER TO DEP THE TWR OPERATOR ASKED IF WE RECEIVED HIS XMISSION TO 'CANCEL OUR TKOF CLRNC.' I REPLIED, 'NO.' OF COURSE IF WE HAD, WE WOULD STILL HAVE BEEN ON THE GND. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE REMEDY FOR THAT TYPE OF SITUATION IS, UNLESS IT'S TO TEACH CTLRS TO LISTEN ALSO. WE CERTAINLY NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED ANY CLRNC CANCELLATION IF IT WAS GIVEN. TOO MANY CTLRS HAVE ONE-WAY COMS--A MIC--THE SPEAKER--MAY JUST AS WELL BE NONEXISTENT.
