On departure from runway 20L, the control tower cleared me into position for takeoff and informed me of departing traffic on runway 20R. I pulled into position on the runway and began my takeoff roll upon seeing departing flight on runway 20R. On climb out the tower called and asked me if I was aware that I hadn't been cleared for takeoff. I was not aware of this. Have been flying in calif for the last 5 yrs. Am accustomed to simultaneous departures on parallel runways at john wayne orange county airport and vny. If the bna tower only wished 1 departure at a time on runways 20R and 20L, it would be more clear if they would specify to 'hold until after climb out of parallel departing traffic.' callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter has not listened to the tower tapes. Is planning to visit the tower to become better acquainted with the personnel and possibly to hear the tapes. Is not sure if the clearance onto the runway included the phrase 'position and hold.' bna is very sensitive to takeoffs from the parallel runways at the same time.

Title: TKOF WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: ON DEP FROM RWY 20L, THE CTL TWR CLRED ME INTO POS FOR TKOF AND INFORMED ME OF DEPARTING TFC ON RWY 20R. I PULLED INTO POS ON THE RWY AND BEGAN MY TKOF ROLL UPON SEEING DEPARTING FLT ON RWY 20R. ON CLBOUT THE TWR CALLED AND ASKED ME IF I WAS AWARE THAT I HADN'T BEEN CLRED FOR TKOF. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS. HAVE BEEN FLYING IN CALIF FOR THE LAST 5 YRS. AM ACCUSTOMED TO SIMULTANEOUS DEPS ON PARALLEL RWYS AT JOHN WAYNE ORANGE COUNTY ARPT AND VNY. IF THE BNA TWR ONLY WISHED 1 DEP AT A TIME ON RWYS 20R AND 20L, IT WOULD BE MORE CLEAR IF THEY WOULD SPECIFY TO 'HOLD UNTIL AFTER CLBOUT OF PARALLEL DEPARTING TFC.' CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR HAS NOT LISTENED TO THE TWR TAPES. IS PLANNING TO VISIT THE TWR TO BECOME BETTER ACQUAINTED WITH THE PERSONNEL AND POSSIBLY TO HEAR THE TAPES. IS NOT SURE IF THE CLRNC ONTO THE RWY INCLUDED THE PHRASE 'POS AND HOLD.'
