After flaps were retracted [following takeoff]; the 'leading edge' amber disagree light did not extinguish. Climbed to 5;000 feet MSL and accomplished the QRH procedure for leading edge slat disagreement. Declared an emergency; burned off fuel and returned to [departure airport] for an uneventful landing. Turned aircraft over to maintenance for further action.
