Narrative:

Right after takeoff we experienced pitch trim failure followed by backup pitch trim failure. We leveled off; notified ATC and requested an immediate return to the field. We then ran the QRH and set up for a long approach after determining that the aircraft was stable and controllable. [We] notified flight attendant that we were making a precautionary landing and declared an emergency with ATC. We then carefully configured the aircraft for landing to insure controllability and landed without incident.
