On approach requested flaps 1 and got 'le asym' EICAS and needles indicated flaps between up and 1. [We] broke off approach; requested vectors; worked through checklist; advised flight attendants and passengers. ACARS to dispatch to confirmed landing distance; declared emergency; rolled equipment elected to land on longest runway. Turned off runway before the end; released the emergency equipment; then taxied to gate without further incident.
