Narrative:

During taxi in aircraft was holding short of runway 36C on taxiway north. ATC cleared us to cross 36C and go straight in to ramp. First officer called ramp and stated we were entering ramp on E12 requesting clearance to north line. Ramp gave us clearance to enter E12 to the north line. Actually the clt tower wanted us to enter the ramp at E11. Captain turned right on taxiway east and in the ramp at E12. Called clt tower after gate arrival and tower told us we were not cleared to turn right on east and in the future enter E11. Miscommunication between the pilots and ramp control. Captain should have cleared this up before turning on taxiway east.
