Narrative:

After a long day of flying approx 6.5 hours; the following conditions were applicable to my day: 1. Extensive taxi time in ord and jfk. 2. Lengthened day due to holding in flight resulting in: 3. Very little break time between flights. 4. Was not able to get a meal since breakfast at xa:00. A message was relayed in flight from operations to the flight crew; which the first officer needed to call scheduling due to an amended schedule. After arriving to the gate and passengers had exited; I contacted scheduling. They informed me that I needed to operate a flight to bos. I would have then been released to rest in bos for xa:10; reduced rest; and then report for a deadhead back to jfk where I would resume my trip. Due to safety reasons; I felt I was unfit to perform the duties on the leg to bos due to fatigue. I reported for duty adequately rested in order to comply with my trip obligation for that day and to complete my assignment but was unable due to fatigue and my concerns of safety to comply with an additional flying leg.I feel that contacting a crew member while in flight concerning a scheduling issue in a very busy environment (jfk) is a critical safety issue. I feel that this is non essential communication that created distractions to the flight crew. This event created anxiety; concern; and other emotions that I feel could easily have been communicated while on the ground...not in flight!
