Narrative:

Today I got a clearance from monterey ground; given mry 9 rwy 28L departure as filed. Looked in GPS and found mry 9 but didn't see 28L; questioned ground; they advised I see MRY9 10L/right not 28L and request that they read me the departure procedure. [The controller] seemed to think it was an unreasonable request. I kept looking and found mry 9 28L departure; GPS gave headings and not altitudes. So I requested he read it to me again. He then requested [I] look up the obstacle clearance departure procedure; which I did; I took off runway heading in visual conditions; departure procedure says climb 800 or 1;700: I was at approximately 1;100 ft; I was initiating a turn and I was asked to contact departure [who] requested 076 (I think) then as I passed 1;700 they gave me direct sns. My primary flight display failed therefore I focused on flying the airplane until I could pull the breakers and re-set it. Before sns I was taking on ice (I turned on de-ice prop; wings etc.); and flying on back-up instruments until the pfd re-set itself. Passing 7;000 ft I was asked to call mry tower which I did. To keep this from happening again [I plan to] keep paper departure procedures handy. Please accept this as a report on a pfd failure.
