Narrative:

On climbout; the number two egt spiked with a red light indication; and the engine continued to indicate erratic indications with the thrust lever retarded. The crew elected to return; and while initiating the return and descent; the engine was shut down with the engine failure shutdown checklist. Before the turn to final; the control of the aircraft was swapped to permit the captain to fly the approach and land. The landing was uneventful.it may be useful to include expanded text on referencing the N1; N2; and fuel flow gauges as well during abnormal egt indications. Additionally; maintenance will require the time the engine was shutdown to address how long the engine was wind-milling. Finally; I recommend a policy be formalized to not permit the crew to fly for the remainder of the duty day following any engine shutdown.
