Narrative:

I had a near miss in the pattern. I was doing an end of course check in the DA42 with a multi private student. We had a 20 KT tailwind on left downwind. One other DA42 was in the pattern. After our first takeoff we were directed to a left downwind. A DA20-C1 called in from the south practice area and they were directed to a left base entry; and we were to follow that aircraft. The other DA42 was ahead of us. The student looked for traffic and saw the twinstar on base and assumed it was the DA20-C1. I was sure it wasn't and kept scanning. We 'met up' on the downwind to base turn with the katana about 300 ft below us. Fortunately the CFI in the DA20-C1 also saw us about the same time. I took control from the student and did a hard right turn then back to the left to come in behind the DA20-C1. The instructor in the DA20-C1 saw us about the same time and also took evasive action.
