Narrative:

While on final to runway xx; I called for gear down. Got 3 green lights and I was getting ready to call for flaps 25 when EICAS message unsafe gear and amber gear light came on. Short time later tail skid light and EICAS message came on. Called for checklist; the relief pilot was getting it out; but we were approaching the runway and I said to be ready for go-around. I extended flaps 25 to see if we got an aural warn; but did not. The relief pilot was giving procedures when out of 400 ft we got 'too low gear' and so I executed missed approach. We had normal miss; I informed passengers; ran checklists for unsafe gear and tail skid. We returned and I dropped gear early to see if it would happen again. It did not and we made normal landing and taxi. I discussed with maintenance in operations. Nice when you have time and good support and extra first officer!
