Narrative:
I was given a heading of 150 degrees; prior to reaching peeer on the PEVEE1 departure from smo; direct pevee when able. I turned 150 degrees and entered direct pevee in the FMS and selected navigation. The aircraft started a turn back toward peeer intersection. I returned to heading mode; turned to 150 degrees; re-entered pevee in the FMS and selected navigation. Peeer and pevee intersection names are easy to confuse when entering them in the direct box of the FMC. Additionally; peeer intersection is used in the peeer and the pevee departure procedures. To prevent a recurrence; I believe that one of the names should be changed.
